❄️ Storm Safety & Preparedness Tips:
Significant winter storms can lead to power outages, icy conditions, and limited emergency access. Personal safety starts with being prepared before the storm arrives.
🔥 Keep the Heat On (If Safe to Do So)
- Maintain safe indoor temperatures to help prevent frozen pipes – a minimum of 55° F.
- If leaving the property, never turn the heat completely off.
⚡ If Power Goes Out
- Know emergency shut-offs and contact protocols
- Use generators safely outdoors only
- Avoid candles; use flashlights or battery lighting
🧊 Avoid Frozen Pipes
- Let faucets drip
- Open cabinet doors near plumbing to allow warm air circulation.
- If heat is off for extended periods – Shut off the main water supply and drain.
- Wrap towels, blankets, or pipe insulation around exposed pipes.
- Turn off the interior supply to all exterior spigots and drain.
- Install an insulated cover on exterior spigots.
🚜 Snow Removal & Outdoor Safety
- Clear and salt walkways, entrances, and emergency exits promptly
- Do not allow exterior faucets/spigots to drip on walkways
- Mark hazards hidden by snow and ice
- Remind residents to use handrails and proper footwear
⛑️ Personal Safety Reminder
FEMA recommends having an emergency kit that includes:
- Water (at least 1 gallon per person or pet per day)
- Non-perishable food
- Flashlights & extra batteries
- Battery-powered or hand-crank radio
- Medications for people and pets
- Basic first aid supplies
- Blankets, warm clothing, hats & gloves
